Direct Response Training offers Driver CPC courses in Glasgow, Edinburgh, across Scotland & U.K.

Driver CPC training is required by LGV and PCV drivers who drive, or may want to in future drive, professionally throughout the UK. It has been developed as a requirement of the EU Directive 2003/59, which is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of professional LGV and PCV drivers throughout their working life and to improve driving safety on UK roads.

Our courses include:

Driver Emergency First Aid, Driver Health, Nutrition and Wellbeing, Tachographs, Manual Handling and Driver Health & Safety / Fire Safety. (All 5 courses are 7-hour modules)

Driver Emergency First Aid (7hr Module)

A vital qualification for any professional driver to possess, the skills gained provide the learner with the ability to manage emergency situations and prioritise treatment at the scene of an incident.

Learning outcomes:
At the end of this course the driver will be able to:
• Assess a scene, check for dangers, and prioritise casualties / treatment
• Carry out a primary assessment (D R A B C)
• Communicate effectively with the emergency services
• Carry out CPR where necessary
• Use a Automatic External Defibrillation device where available
• Deal with minor injuries including burns, bleeding, wounds
• Understand safe use of the recovery position
• Understand how to deal with a casualty experiencing shock
• Understand how to deal with a casualty who is experiencing a seizure
• Understand how to deal with a casualty who is choking
• Identifying the risk factors when dealing with crush injuries

The learner will be guided through a power point presentation and a number of scenarios using practical resources provided by the instructor.

The learner will be required to pass practical activities such as CPR technique, AED pad position and use, recovery position, effective techniques to deal with choking using choke trainer vest.

The instructor will use verbal questioning throughout the session to ensure level of understanding on the course syllabus is being achieved.

DRIVER HEALTH, NUTRITION AND WELLBEING (7hr Module)

The physical and mental health of drivers is critical to increasing life expectancy, overall good health and also the ability to drive a heavy goods vehicle safely. This course will provide the drivers with advice and guidance on the benefits of a healthy, nutritious diet and how to eat well when on the road as well as at home.

Learning outcomes:
This course will provide the learner with information on the links between good physical and mental health.
This course will provide the learner with information on recognising mental health challenges, how to source support, and when to escalate support for themselves or others during challenging times.
This course will provide the learner with the skills to eat healthily and make the correct diet related choices to promote healthy food choices.
This course will enable the learner to identify challenges around mental health and promote positive choices to promote mental health.

TACHOGRAPHS (7hr Module)

During this course drivers will receive information and instruction on their responsibilities relating to driver hours, they will receive demonstration / instruction on how to use tachographs and the importance of accuracy when using the equipment.

Learning outcomes:
• Why digital tachographs were introduced
• The vehicle unit (VU), mode selection and different on-screen messages
• Time management and the importance of logging on and off
• How to carry out manual entries and mixed tachograph operation
• Use of Tachograph cards (including lost, stolen, damaged and malfunctioning cards

The legislation around tachographs will be explained as well as the information on the action that can be taken against the driver / company if these rules are not followed.

MANUAL HANDLING (7hr Module)

As part of a driver’s duties, safe handling of goods is a common responsibility. This course will provide the learners with theoretical and practical knowledge on Manual Handling, how to safely assess loads before moving and that check that any equipment is suitable for the intended use. During this course, the driver will be given information on the relevant legislation surrounding manual handling at work.

The instructor will also provide the learner with techniques in safe lifting and carrying to avoid injury.

Through practical demonstration by the instructor and PowerPoint based presentation, the learner will be able to understand the requirements of the employer and the employee in relation to manual handling tasks.

DRIVER HEALTH & SAFETY / FIRE SAFETY (7hr Module)

As with other employees across differing industries, there is a responsibility for drivers to be familiar with information and instruction on their, and their employer's responsibilities in relation to the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974;
During this session the instructor will provide information and instruction:
• To raise awareness of Health & Safety issues that are common in the workplace and the industry;
• To provide information on accident reporting procedures and best practice in this area;
• To provide information on the causes of fire;
• To raise awareness of fire prevention methods;
• To give instruction on the correct type of extinguisher to use;
• To provide information and guidance on contacting the emergency services

The learner will be guided through a power point presentation, a number of real-life scenarios / examples will be used to highlight the dangers / issues.
The class will participate in open forum discussions to share / understand the information being presented.
The instructor will use verbal questioning throughout the session to ensure level of understanding on the course syllabus is being achieved.
